Linda Kozak

It's been my privilege to be a life-long Alaskan, spending my childhood years in Dillingham, a small town in Bristol Bay. We commercially fished at a salmon setnet site during the summer months and my family continues the tradition to this day. Two of my sons currently run the operation at the small fishing village of Ekuk. I moved to Kodiak in the spring of 1977 and raised my children here. I have been working as a fisheries consultant since 1987 and travel frequently on behalf of my clients who fish for halibut, crab, blackcod, and Pacific cod. My husband, Mark, is a life-long resident of Kodiak who worked as a commercial pilot for local air taxi operations for eight years before taking a job with the City of Kodiak, where he is currently employed. Years ago my son, Nicholas, presented me with a digital camera for Mother's Day. I thanked him and set it on the shelf. Later that summer, I took a close-up picture of a wild iris and e-mailed it to my friends. After receiving some compliments, some of which were solicited, I embarked on a Kodiak wildflower exploration. Over two years I almost exclusively photographed wildflowers and then moved into scenery. I quickly discovered the limitations of still footage and wanted to see movement, so I convinced my family that the next gift should be a digital video camera. I've enjoyed sharing the beauty of my island with friends and family through framed photos, flower refrigerator magnets, sing-along praise and worship songs, and my latest product, the devotional DVD. Only by seeing Kodiak through the lens of the camera, have I come to fully appreciate the beauty and wonder of my island.
